Naomi Lambert was driving Amber and her brother to Balmoral Village in the rain when the car struck a pot hole on a corner and she lost control.
Mrs Lambert and her son suffered serious injuries, but Amber passed away in the ambulance on the way to hospital.
Amber isn't the only person to lose her life on Wilson Drive.
However, John and Naomi Lambert are doing everything they can to ensure she's the last.
The couple has fought tirelessly with the assistance of Wollondilly MP Jai Rowell for funding to upgrade the road.
"Wilson Drive is disgusting," Mr Lambert said.
"There are significant drainage issues, the road is collapsing and potholes are forming.
"We had petitioned and petitioned for the road to be upgraded and the speed limit dropped from 100km/h, but nothing had been done."
The Lamberts got in touch with Mr Rowell and council in the week after the crash.
Mr Rowell visited the crash site and said he would do all in his power to help them.
"Jai took our initial idea and has gone beyond everything we ever dreamed," Mrs Lambert said.
Mayor Duncan Gair met with the family to discuss funding options and the condition of the road.
"We will do everything we can with the money we have to make the roads as safe as possible," Cr Gair said.
"I acknowledge the work the Lamberts have done, even through the loss of their child."
However, $116,000 in funding has been provided by the Community Road Safety Fund which will be implemented in coming months.
The works will include installing barriers, improving line markings, raising reflective pavement markers, installing guide posts and curve advisory markers and a speed zone review.
A Centre for Road Safety spokesperson said there had been 12 crashes between 2009 and 2013 on that stretch of road.
The crashes had resulted in one fatality and 10 people injured.
In addition to the road upgrade, Mr Rowell secured funding for three sets of forcible entry tools for Hill Top, Colo Vale and Balmoral Village Rural Fire Service stations.
Mr Rowell said he was inspired by the Lamberts' courage.
"What they have done has brought out the best in the entire community and it's the best thing I've ever seen in my political career," he said.
"Full credit to John and Naomi for the enormous advocacy they've done to achieve this outcome."
A council document has stated works on the road were scheduled to be completed by May.
