MOSS Vale Magic has returned to the winners' circle in the NSW Waratah Youth League basketball competition.
The Magic secured a comprehensive 86-64 victory over last year's semi-finalist Blacktown Storm in round six action on Saturday night at Blacktown.
Moss Vale's team started the match with a high level of intensity that had been missing in recent matches, which took the Storm by surprise.
Blacktown struggled to trouble the Magic defence on its home court.
The Storm is a high-scoring team with a roster that boasts the services of Adup Adup, who was selected in last year's All Star Five and is currently second in the league for scoring with an average of 21.5 points per game.
However, the Magic's man-to-man defence worked well as a unit. T
his made it difficult for the Storm to get any open shots.
In the open court, Hayden Cook was instrumental in shutting down the Storm's fast break with some great plays on defensive transition.
The Magic's off-season recruit Tyler Payne stamped his authority early in the game.
Payne dominated the paint and scored 12 points in the quarter as the Magic led 20-18 at the first break.
Magic captain Nick Bizjak started to heat up in the second quarter with a couple of three-point bombs on his way to 13 points for the quarter.
He was well supported by Rhys Pryor, who proved a handful for the Storm defence, while Dane Jensen always provides the Magic with plenty of energy when he is injected into the game.
Isaac Martin, playing just his second Youth League game for the Magic, also showed he is ready to play at this level with some strong hustle on defence which saw the Magic take the lead 46-34 at half time.
The Storm made a run at the Magic in the third quarter and managed to trim the lead back to seven points.
However, Magic point guard Billy Campbell controlled the tempo and Bizjak scored 13 points for the quarter, including a treble of three-pointers.
The Magic managed to steady the ship and retained the lead 67-50 at the last break.
Coach Kevin Campbell rested centre Tyler Payne for most of the third period due to foul trouble.
But he was able to inject Payne back into the game in the last quarter, where he combined well with Jensen and Nick Gardiner to control the boards at both ends.
When Isaac Martin connected on a three-pointer midway through the quarter, the Magic lead had blown out to 30 points.
This allowed Moss Vale to play out the remainder of the game with a rookie lineup, including Justin Sloggett, Mitch Bancroft and development player Carter Reeves from the Magic under-18s.
Reeves scored his first points in Youth League with a neat layup to complete the scoring as the Magic ran out winner 86-64.
Top scorers for the Magic were Nick Bizjak with a game-high 28 points,Tyler Payne (18), Rhys Pryor (13), Jensen (11) and Isaac Martin (seven).
After playing four games on the road, the Magic now looks forward to playing its first home game of the season this Saturday.
The Magic will take on the Sydney Uni Spiders at 5pm at the Moss Vale Basketball Stadium.
