The closure resulted in traffic banked up for several kilometres.
At about 4.30pm, traffic was diverted through the towns of Mittagong, Bowral and Moss Vale due to a police operation.
The diversion remained in place until 9.30pm.
A statement released by NSW Police stated that police had resolved the operation that took place yesterday at Berrima.
“After several hours a man was taken into police care and has been transported to a medical facility for appropriate treatment,” the statement said.
“Police would like to thank members of the public and media for their assistance and patience during this prolonged negotiation which was able to be brought to a safe and successful conclusion.”
