ROTARY'S Gaolbreak event over the Australia Day weekend in Berrima netted more than $100,000 that will be put back into the Southern Highlands community.

Berrima District Rotary president Allen Cupitt said the weekend ran extremely well.
"More than 6000 people came through the gaol, we sold more than 250 tickets to the bushdance and more than 500 people came to the opera," he said.
Even though it rained during Saturday night's bushdance, Mr Cupitt said people enjoyed dancing in the rain and a world record was still created with 122 lagerphones.
"We would like to thank the community for its support - we had 180 volunteers helping out - and our local members attended multiple events.
"It was a fantastic weekend and a wonderful demonstration of what a community is," he said.
As a thank you to the Berrima community, $2000 will be immediately directed towards the village's German Internees River Walk project which will cover the final infrastructure and marketing costs before the walk launches in March.
"We also want to talk to the Corrections department about maintaining the gaol more regularly so it doesn't fall into such a neglected state again," Mr Cupitt said.
