At about 7.45pm officers attached to the Wollongong Local Area Command (LAC) received reports of a loud bang overhead between Bulli Tops and Sublime Point.
Officers attached to Fire and Rescue NSW, Police Rescue and NSW Ambulance paramedics commenced a wide-scale search of the area.
While nothing has been found at this point, police have received reports of a missing single-seater aircraft that had one man on board after it left Wedderburn Airport today.
A foot and air search of the area will continue over the next few hours and will recommence at first light, around 6am tomorrow morning.
A command post has been set up at Sublime Point Lookout.
No further details are known at this time.
