The Hero Games are held in CrossFit boxes around the country to recognise and honour service men and women who lost their lives in combat and to raise money for selected charities which support the welfare of Australian service men and women’s families.
This year, the Australian Hero Games honoured Corporal Mathew ‘Hoppy’ Hopkins who was killed while conducting a patrol near Kakarak when his team was engaged by a group of about 20 Taliban.
CrossFit Southern Highlands co-owner Naomi Benedetti said being able to support the men and women and their families who paid the ultimate sacrifice for Australia and its way of life was of great importance.
“Doing this with a physical workout not only reminds us of how lucky we are to be able to have the freedom and ability to move our bodies without restrictions, as so many returned soldiers can’t, but it gives us a tiny idea of the physical and mental hardships of war time,” she said.
“This is an event that we will support each year and welcome extra donations to the cause.”
The charity nominated by Corporal Hopkins’ next of kin for Hero WOD Hoppy was Walking Wounded because of the outstanding support they gave after his death.
