HAMISH Ta-mé will demonstrate why he is considered one of Australia’s best photographers in his upcoming photography exhibition.
Hamish has taken portraits, photographed interiors and runway models, created his own unique camera, and is now very excited to be able to share his love of street photography.
“My work as a commercial photographer is often very complicated and involves many people, from hair and makeup teams to stylists and several assistants, art directors and many more.”
“The kind of images that are on show are the exact opposite.”
The images that Hamish will exhibit are taken at a range of destinations across Sydney, and also key places within the Highlands.
“I popped down to Coles one day and managed to find a fantastic patch of light that cast amazing shadows, and that photo will be on show this weekend.”
“When I am shooting these images it is just me and a camera watching the light as it passes across the built environment.”
“It’s meditation in a way, photography at its simplest.”
Hamish’s extensive career portfolio includes working at Vogue, the catwalks of Milan and Amsterdam and being selected as an ambassador for Nikon.
“My backstage work actually relates beautifully to this street style of photography.
“When you’re backstage there’s always weird light, spotlights, fluros? So you have to cast your eyes around and look for the incredible things happening and capture them.
“Street photography has that same kind of opportunistic approach.
“You can’t stage manage these things, all you can hope is to get a beautiful patch of light in just the right spot and find the right things happening.
“You have to start consiously watching your environment and become engaged with the things around you.”
Hamish recently established Ten Thousand Paces in Bowral.
Ten Thousand Paces is an artist space in Springett’s Arcade, dedicated to showcasing the work of local artists and designers and making art accessible to the general public.
“Ten Thousand Paces is a co-op style set up where I have pulled 23 artists, makers, designers and cool crafters to show their work in a commercial environment in the heart of Bowral.”
The artist space regularly features exhibitions, visits and talks from a range of prominent artists and curators, although this is the first time that the modest Hamish has exhibited his work at Ten Thousand Paces.
“I’m just a guy in a gallery at the moment,” he said.
“I mean, everyone has a back story.”
Catch the opening of Hamish Ta-mé’s street photography exhibition this Saturday, November 29 at Ten Thousand Paces (Springett's Arcade) from 2pm, where it will be shown for a week.
