The reasons for this are varied and include the need to get something not available locally, more choice in larger shopping complexes outside the Highlands and the opportunity for more bargains or cheaper items in general.
It all sounds good in theory but the more we choose to shop elsewhere, the greater impact we have on our Highlands economy.
And that is an economy we expect to support our young people as they head into the workforce as well as keep financially viable the many small family-owned businesses that are integral to the character of this community.
Sure there are many larger chain stores that have popped up in the Highlands in recent years and they too are providing many jobs for the people of this community.
The introduction of such larger business also add to the variety on offer to shoppers so there is less need to head outside the region for the shopping options.
And while someone is out buying their household needs at a local store, possibly even one of the chain stores in the area, there is a greater chance that they will stop for a coffee or lunch and take look at what is on offer in many of the local stores in the way of fashion, sporting and even gift ideas as we head into the Christmas season.
In fact staying local for your shopping needs has several advantages.
The less time you spend on the road travelling, the more time you have to shop.
What-is-more those trips to other areas also come with often costly travel expenses.
If these expenses are added to the cost of that shopping trip surely the savings benefits of shopping outside the area are depleted. With all this in mind the argument to buy local seems fairly straight forward.
So next time you are planning a shopping trip make it a local destination.
