In a huge boon for sport in the Highlands, the Bowral Blacks Rugby Union Club will host the 2015 NRMA NSW Championships.
More than 600 players and officials from nine zones across NSW will head to Eridge Park on May 2 and 3.
Zones to be represented include Illawarra, which incorporates the Southern Highlands.
The competition will be played at two levels - open and colts (under 20s).
Bowral club president Mark Freund said the championship was the highest level for representative rugby in NSW.
The event's best players will be picked for the prestigious Country Kookaburras.
The championship is expected to attract thousands of supporters to the region. Freund said it was a great honour for the Blacks.
"It was a bit of a shock, we didn't know much about it," he said.
It has been a big month for the club after hosting the Southern Highlands Rugby 7s tournament on October 4.
Freund said the 7s was a success and might have helped secure the 2015 NSW Championships.
"I think word got around... they thought why not hold it at Bowral."
Freund said hosting the championships wasn't just great for the Blacks.
"We want for more revenue for the club and better things to attract people to the area," he said.
The championship is expected to tie in with the scheduled opening of stages one and two of the Eridge Park clubhouse. The changes include upgrades to changeroom facilities.
