On Sunday family and friends paid tribute to Ian with a barbecue and paddle out exactly 12 months after his ashes were cast into the ocean.
The surfboard styled seat is made from spotted gum with stainless steel seat supports that were designed and made by Eurobodalla Shire Council.
Special thanks go to council’s workshop lads Scott Grelck who did most of the work finished off by Keil Rosevear under the supervision of Allan Crapp, and Mark Strahlendorf, the craftsmanship is world class.
The timber surfboard back was shaped by Ian’s sons Josh and Aaron along with daughter Sarah from local timber supplied by Simply Slabs and all the timberwork was gifted to the community by Ian’s family, friends and the One Tree Boardriders.
“It is a place to reflect, appreciate and love,” Ian’s daughter Sarah said.
Thanks to Council Parks staff for the installation. It is hoped that this bench will be the first of three or four to be installed on One Tree Point. Be sure to call down and take a seat for a while and watch the world go by.
This will be the new design for other new benches to be provided on One Tree Point that will replace the old roughhewn splintery slab seats on the Point at the moment,
Later during the anniversary paddle out, whales appeared as if to help celebrate just like they did in the original service.
