It seems to me that our council has failed to differentiate between the green waste disposal needs of ratepayers who live in towns and those who live in the villages and surrounds.
Unhappy with having the new green bin with its $80 PA charge foisted upon us, I approached Wingecarribee Shire Council and offered to return the bin, unused.
In accordance with councils own directive in their online environmental policy that "residents should compost their own food and garden waste", we compost all our green waste in an environmentally friendly manner.
A spokesperson from council told me that JR Richards were now contracted to provide the new service to all ratepayers, after a survey conducted by council indicated that 62 per cent of residents were in favour of the new more expensive waste disposal scheme.
When I requested to opt out of the new service, I was bluntly told that the only option available to me was to discontinue our entire waste collection service.
As council would know, this is not a feasible proposition.
So our green bin continues to sit empty and unloved behind our garage, while the new and shiny JR Richards trucks roll around the shire, implementing a costly service that many of us do not want or need.
