However, the issue was brought to the fore on Saturday when Southern Highlands Community Hospice Group hosted a Dying to Know Day.

More than 200 people gathered at the Mittagong RSL to learn more about death and end of life care.

Hospice group business manager Daphne Robertson said the day was held to inform community members on what was available for end of life care.

"It was about demystifying myths about death and dying," she said.

Guest speakers included Dr Michael Barbato, who has more than 20 years of experience in palliative care.

Dr Barbato discussed issues such as how families would prepare for a loved one's death and the importance of "finishing up", a term he preferred to death.

"I like to call it finishing up business," he said.

Ms Robertson said Dr Barbato, who had agreed to become the hospice group's patron, provided a relevant and inspiring talk.

She said Dr Barbato summed up the day when he borrowed a quote from celebrity Woody Allen.

"No one gets out of this world alive," he said.

Other guest speakers on Saturday were RMB Lawyers Bowral's Catherine Holz and Melissa Pacheco, who spoke about issues such as wills and the power of attorney.

Ms Robertson discussed progress made by the hospice group, while group committee member Jane Mahony spoke about the future of palliative care.

The event finished with a question and answer session between attendees and an expert panel.

Ms Robertson said the Dying to Know Day was a success and the group aimed to hold an event once a year or every two years.
