Children visited the town library and had a visit from an author, took part in a book character parade and read books with their buddies.
Primary School children also known as Prep children, learnt about what the school was doing in support of their "Compassion" children and what the school houses stand for: "Watoto" is named after the African children's choir and children learnt about the work Jesus is doing for children in Africa; "Pinero" is named after Phillipe Pinero, a missionary in Vanuatu where Southern Highlands Christian School visits each year to further the work of the gospel and shares Jesus with the people of Vanuatu they meet; "Pullinger" is named after Jacky Pullinger, a missionary in Hong Kong who takes in men from the streets and shows them the love and saving grace of Jesus.
Children read many stories over the week, viewed digital texts and heard others read, which encouraged Prep children to engage with books many times everyday. Joining in with Lower Primary, they sewed, painted, built, cooked (and ate) and experienced new book adventures. Southern Highlands Christian School Prep is planning a Maths Week next term to explore numbers, length, pattern and time with hands on experiences to make the challenge of maths real and alive. Prep students learn through doing, exploring, guessing, experimenting, enquiring, working together and trying new things. Learning in Prep is fun, engaging, directed by the children's interests and aimed to develop social skills in preparation for formal learning, but mostly it is fun!
