THE Moss Vale Magic under-12 girls basketball team travelled to Sutherland to compete in the inaugural State Shield on the weekend.
In the first game the Magic was up against an unknown Manly Sea Eagles.
This clearly didn't worry the girls as they defeated the Sea Eagles by an easy 13 points, with the final score 33-20.
Moss Vale was up against the Gosford City Rebels in the second match.
Gosford had also beaten Manly, so this was to be a must win for the girls to advance into the final.
Having already played Gosford earlier in the year and only defeating them by two points, it was going to be a tough game.
Clearly the Magic's hard work at training and continuous improvement throughout the year paid off.
Moss Vale defeated the Rebels by 18 points with the final score 39-21.
The girls stopped Gosford from scoring any points in the second quarter, while building on their own score, paving the way to an easy win.
On Sunday the girls were up against the Coffs Harbour Suns, whose captain held the title of highest point scorer for Saturday's games.
This clearly did not concern the girls as they got out to an eight lead and continued to build on this finally winning 40-26.
The team's ability to move the ball around enabled Georgie Mitchell to score 22 points and teammate Amy Aquillina scored 10 points.
This along with a great team effort in defence shut down the Coffs Harbour Suns' game.
Mitchell went on to be named MVP for the game.
