Poor weather forced the memorial service to be moved from the traditional venue of the Vietnam War Memorial in Settler's Park, Bowral.
Attendees included civil dignitaries and representatives from ex-service organisations and all Highlands schools.
This year marked the 52nd anniversary of the start of Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War.
The local service was run by the Southern Highlands Vietnam Veterans' Association.
Association publicity officer Norm Austin said he was pleased with the attendance on Monday.
"I think numbers were probably up a bit this year," he said.
"It's very important for the Vietnam veterans and the public at large."
Mr Austin said the event was held to honour the service by veterans.
"It's to acknowledge the memory, and acknowledge the pain and suffering they have been experiencing since," he said.
"It was very moving."
Guest speakers included Major Pat Heffernan, who has served in the army for more than 14 years.
Mr Heffernan served with the Special Air Services Regiment in Afghanistan.
"His speech had the theme of ordinary people doing extraordinary things (in the Vietnam War)," Mr Austin said.
"Pat spoke about dedication, perseverance and training."
Attendees were invited to lay a wreath at the service, with the wreaths later transported to the Vietnam War Memorial.
