UP AGAINST some of the best riders in the world, Highlands teenager Tirawa Gristwood finished 40th at the Scooter World Championships over the weekend.
It was just his first time competing at that level and heading into the competition he had high hopes.
Before he flew out to the UK, Tirawa injured his ankle and had it iced up for three days before he left.
Since the Australian Titles he had no practice and had to quickly adjust to conditions in the UK.
His father Shane said he dropped a couple of tricks in his rides and was disappointed with the way he performed.
"He got a couple of low scores he wasn't happy with. He felt he could have done a lot better on the day," he said.
But Tirawa didn't leave empty handed.
He beat the current US champion at the championships, which had been one of his goals.
Four Australian riders made the finals finishing second, fifth, 10th and 11th.
The second placed rider missed out on the world title by just 0.3 points.
