JUNIOR Highlands hockey representative players received a boost on Monday.
Stephen Jones MP, Federal Member for Throsby, was on hand at Welby Hockey Fields to present cheques to three of the 2013 representative teams.
The under-18 girls and under-15 girls and boys team were successful in their application for Local Sporting Champion grants.
The grant was an Australian Government initiative designed to provide financial assistance towards the cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment when competing, coaching or officiating at an official national sporting organisation (NSO) endorsed competition or a School Sport Australia state or national championships.
Southern Highlands Hockey Association’s president Narelle Evans said it was great encouragement for the players to continue representing the Highlands.
“It’s great, it helps support the families of the kids and gives them an opportunity to go away and represent the district and get more experience at state championships,” she said.
On the back of last year’s successful representative season, the under-18 boys stepped up a division in 2014 after winning in 2013.
The rest of the rep teams finished in the top four.
Two players, Sam Airey and Higgy Blaik, made the NSW side while three others were selected in the state elite squad.
“The more support we get, the more kids we can get to play and the more kids we can get to be able to represent the district and play hockey,” Evans said.
