Heritage groups and history appreciators will combine their passion for knowledge of the past to celebrate Mittagong's 150th anniversary in 2015.
One major celebration included in Mittagong's anniversary is the commemoration of the Fitz Roy Iron Works in Mittagong.
To kick off the celebration preparations, a launch of the anniversary celebrations will be held at Mittagong RSL on July 30 this year and will be co-ordinated by academic historian and Mittagong resident Leah Day.
"Mittagong RSL is sponsoring the entire event," Mrs Day said.
"We have had a good response from people, councillors, community leaders and people interested in history."
Mrs Day has been closely involved in uncovering the history of the Fitz Roy Iron Works.
This included acting as heritage consultant during the unearthing of archaeological artifacts in the Highlands Marketplace carpark.
"Due to the archaeological investigations sponsored by Woolworths, the efforts of the early pioneers of the Iron Works are recorded in the carpark of the Highlands Markeplace," Mrs Day said.
"It is the only shopping centre in Australia that has an iron works property on it. It's unique."
Celebrations are already planned for the month of May in 2015.
\During this month in 1864, the first blast furnace in Australia was lit unsuccessfully.
In May of 1865 the first blast furnace in Australia was lit successfully in Mittagong.
"It's going to be a very exciting period of time for the 150th year of blast furnace operating," Mrs Day said.
Mrs Day said it was important for the community to come together to celebrate.
"It's very important to acknowledge the role that the Fitz Roy Iron Works directors and workers played in the development of iron works itself, that laid the foundation for the establishment of the New Sheffield sub division that is now known as Mittagong," Mrs Day said.
While the launch is invite-only, the mayor, councillors, council staff, service clubs, Mittagong Public School, Uniting Church, Berrima Historical Society residents and early Mittagong families have been invited.
