The 237 Army Cadet Unit in Thirlmere will open its doors for the first time to potential cadets and their parents for an information day on the recruitment process.
On the day visitors will be given a demonstration of field training, general cadet activities and an insight into their roles in the unit.
Following the demonstration will be a detailed consultation on the enlistment documents and those who decide to enlist will be issued equipment and uniforms on the day.
Commanding Officer, Dirk Jol, of the Southern Highlands 237 Unit will be hosting the open day and said this was the first time 237 had outwardly recruited cadets.
"We usually have sustained our numbers through our community events, such as Anzac Day," Cdr Jol said.
"But at the end of 2012 many of our cadets were discharged for their HSC and we want to get the numbers back up to a level where we can provide a proper command of control structure."
Cdr Jol said that to be considered as a cadet, applicants must be 12 and a half years old and over, and they will learn how to competently and safely go out on the field.
"After they enlist they undertake a recruitment course over eight to 10 weeks," he said.
"They will learn all the basics of being a cadet such as ceremonial drills, fire arm safety, navigation communication and first aid."
The unit has 28 parading cadets for the region which covers the Wollondilly and Wingecarribee Shires.
The cadets perform one parade a week on Monday's during school terms and do field training exercises on the weekends, every six to eight weeks.
Some of the activities the unit does locally is supply catafalque parties to local Anzac Day services and supports Bowral RSL sub branch and Berrima Legacy during the year with fundraising .
The 237 Army Cadet Unit will be holding the open day this Saturday, June 1 from 9am - 12pm at the Queen Victoria Memorial Homes, Thirlmere Way, Picton.
