Wedding Bouquet is the latest creation of the company Floris London, which has been making fragrances for royal celebrations and special occasions since 1730.
And Highlands woman, Jacqueline Loughray of Ivy House, was the exclusive Australian importer and wholesaler of the royal wedding scent and other products created by Floris.
Mrs Loughray said Wedding Bouquet was the same name given to a scent created by Floris to celebrate the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana.
However, she said the new release fragrance to commemorate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, was very different with a “contemporary white flower theme”.
“The first six bottles of the fragrance were sent to the palace- so there is every chance Kate Middleton could wear the scent on her wedding day,” she said.
“It is a beautiful perfume for brides particularly because of the special meanings given to flowers by the Victorians. Jasmine signifies eternal love, lily of the valley says ‘you have made my life complete’, orange blossom conveys innocence and marriage and stephanotis signifies happiness in marriage.”
It is the latest in an extensive range of Floris products created for special occasions and individuals.
The company made a scent, Bouquet de la Reine for the wedding of Queen Victoria in 1840, and reintroduced the same fragrance for the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
Mrs Loughray said that in the early days of Floris London, the company would blend a personal scent for customers on request.
“They still produce some of the finest quality products in the world using only the best ingredients and pure fragrance oils,” she said.
“This ensures that the fragrances are true, clean and long lasting unlike many companies that use synthetic fragrance oils.
“The heart of the company is still in the original shop at 89 Jermyn Street, London, where the business opened in 1730, and they still hold two Royal warrants.
“The building is just around the corner from the palace and in the early days the Floris clientele was made up of aristocracy and royalty.”
The business continues to be run by descendants of the company founders, Juan Famenias Floris and his wife Elizabeth.
The original formulation for the first Floris fragrance, Limes Perfume, remains a firm favourite with many customers today.
Mrs Loughray said among the people known to favour the Floris range included Florence Nightingale, Marilyn Monroe, Sharon Stone, Oscar Wild, Michael Caine and Al Pacino.
“The Floris brand has also been well documented in the James Bond books – Ian Flemming was a devotee – while Al Pacino’s blind character, in the film Scent of a Woman, said ‘the woman in my sights is wearing Floris’,” she said.
Mrs Loughray, who hails from England, said that she was surprised when she moved to Australia that the Floris range of products was not available anywhere in the country.
“I understood it was sold in David Jones about 20 years ago, but had not been available in the country since then,” she said.
“I had long been familiar with the Floris range in England and I became the exclusive Australia and New Zealand agent for the products about three years ago.”
Mrs Loughray said she had since worked toward making the brand available through several select stores in the country.
“There are now about 15 Floris stockists in the country, including stores in Melbourne, Brisbane and Tasmania and one has recently come on board in New Zealand,” she said.
“We have some lovely new stores joining us shortly and I shall add more as I find them but it will remain a very special, niche brand.”
Mrs Loughray is still the only NSW stockist of the brand with Floris products currently sold through her shop, Highland House in Boolwey Street, Bowral.
However, that will change with Highland House set to close on April 26 after which time Mrs Loughray will continue to sell Floris products online.
Floris is available online at ivyhouse.com.au or at Highland House until April 26.
