SPELLING words such as ghost, turnip, and harmonica earned two local students a place in the NSW Premier's Spelling Bee final, held recently in Sydney.

Burrawang Public School year three student Kai Lavers was awarded Junior Finalist at the event, having placed equal 22nd.
He said preparing for the event was hard work and used his sister to help him practice.
"I did words with my sister," he said.
"Before I was allowed hot chocolate powder to make a hot chocolate I had to get five level five words right."
Kai correctly spelt five words, and was knocked out after incorrectly spelling ravenous, he said.
Reuben Honore from Robertson Public School was also named a finalist at the event in the senior category.
For him, the hardest word to spell was harmonica.
The year five student said he practiced with his parents every day for half an hour.
"I was feeling really nervous on the day, but water calmed me down," he said.
Both students said they would take part again next year.
Kai and Reuben competed against 88,000 other students from NSW public schools, with 75 of those proceeding through to the final.
