The Highlands International Judo Club, based in Robertson but soon to expand to Mittagong due to increased demand, sent the team to Tweed Heads in mid July, and walked away with exceptional results, including the Men’s Open Champion.
“The results are extremely good given the numbers in the team,” coach Terry Riches said.
Jesse Mauger won the men’s open category (and came third in mens heavyweight), and Luke Plumridge took out the lightweight boys under-12 category.
Both are now eligible to represent Australia at the International Championships in Japan in November, with 21-year old Mauger already confirming his attendance (despite badly dislocating his arm in training earlier this week).
Riches said that Mauger’s progress was remarkable considering he had only been participating in Judo for three years.
The team’s results include:
Jemma Coulter: second place in lightweight girls under-10.
Ben Coulter: Third place in middleweight boys under-13 and boys under-13 open.
Vaughn Edmunds: Second place in boys heavyweight under-16.
Nick Riches: Second place in special needs men.
Justin Day: Second place in mens heavyweight and third in mens open
According to Riches, Justin Day was an outstanding competitor at the competition, losing only to more experienced blackbelts on the day.
