Lions captain Graeme Isedale was pleased with his side which keeps Mittagong in sixth spot on the first grade ladder.
“It was a good performance and Blake Worner played very well in the halves,” Isedale said.
Matt Stokes scored first for the Lions in the first half before Isedale himself found the back of the net to make it 2-0 at half time.
Two more goals to Ben Goulder and Matt Stokes in the second half saw the Lions go up 4-0 before Fairy Meadow could even put a score on the board.
A final goal to Harley Peachy late in the second half sealed the win for the Lions, who take on Bowral in the local derby in a fortnight’s time in what is sure to be an intense battle of the Southern Highlands.
Albion Park thrashed Robertson at Welby on Sunday 8-1.
“We turned up very flat and I reckon the first half was one of worst halves of hockey we’ve ever played,” captain Damian Gair said.
Albion Park put on five goals in the first 20 minutes of the game, and took a 6-0 lead going into halftime.
The second half saw an improved effort from the Spuds, keeping the table toppers on just two more goals while Rheece Poulos scored Robertson’s solitary goal with 15 minutes left.
Gair said Ben Donovan stood out for the Spuds in left half and that the team would be looking to make amends against cellar-dwellers Dapto in two weeks time.
Bowral accounted for bottom-placed Dapto on Sunday thanks to an outstanding team performance, captain-coach Robbie Ginn said.
Ginn said every player gave a great effort in the 7-1 win at Fairy Meadow, highlighting Mitch Linolli who had his “game of the year”.
“All in all it was just a great effort from everyone and I’m over the moon with the win,” Ginn said.
Josh Milbank opened Bowral’s scoreboard at the 8th minute before Dapto equalised minutes later.
A goal to Linolli at the 26 minute mark gave Bowral a 2-1 lead at halftime, before the floodgates opened up in the second half, with goals to Glenn Turner, Jason McPherson, and Ginn securing the big win.
Ginn said Jeremy Loveridge and Steve Tuddenham had great games, and key players Steve Downie, Aaron Kershaw and goalkeeper Nial Blair would be likely back on the field for Bowral’s clash with Mittagong in two weeks time.
In the other game Wests defeated Uni 3-1 to retain third spot.
The NSW Open Championships will be held at Moorebank Hockey Centre this weekend..
