The Ambassadorship provides financial support to one exceptional young teacher from a NSW university to travel to India and spend four weeks working in rural classrooms.
Tara.Ed is an Education NGO that aims to promote sustainable, quality education in rural India through teacher training and professional support.
Founded in 2007 by NSW Young Australian of the year and former Bowral High School student Jennifer Star, the organisation asks the question, "If one teacher can change 30 lives, what can 30 teachers do?"
The Tara.Ed program is built around the Teacher Tour, where university teacher education students from Australia undertake an internship in one of the Tara.Ed partner schools, sharing the skills and knowledge gained from their teaching degree with their Indian counterparts.
The program is a direct reflection of Rotary's motto "Service above Self" as it encourages young Australian teachers to contribute to the world they will one day inherit.
Nineteen-year-old Megan Ayre is one of a team of four pre-service teachers and two education experts who recently returned from a four-week tour of India.
Ms Ayre, who is undertaking a Bachelor of Science (Chemistry)-Bachelor of Education at the University of NSW, was the recipient of the Inaugural 2012 Rotary Club of Berrima District Tara.Ed Ambassadorship.
Although Australian by birth, Ms Ayre grew up in Romania and consequently overcame significant challenges to complete her high school education and gain admission to university. She felt she had something to share with the Indian students.
"I wanted to become involved in Tara.Ed as I felt I could connect with students from a disadvantaged background," she said.
"I wanted to show them that education is something to be valued and pursued.
"I wanted to give them a hope that they can become successful despite their placement in this world."
During the visit, she and the team worked at charity-run Gyanankur English School in Kesnand, in the state of Maharastra, which caters to underprivileged and rural children.
They also worked with seven local government and trust schools as part of the community outreach program.
The Rotary Club of Berrima District has a long history of supporting Tara.Ed, as one of Tara.Ed's 2007 Founding Supporters and in 2011 the club named Tara.Ed founder Jennifer Star a Paul Harris Fellow.
