I WOULD like to thank Cr Arkwright for her response to my proposal regarding the positioning of a purpose built Performing Arts centre.
I would like, though, to question a number of aspects to the proposed development of Bowral Memorial Hall.
I have discussed this proposal with a number of local members of the performing arts community and the development you refer to definitely does not have the community support you claim it has, according to them.
The 300 audience you refer to is, according to my sources, totally inadequate for a multi-purpose building. This equitable use of facilities you refer to is not in keeping with this refurbishment proposal.
An audience of 300 might be suitable for recitals, string quartets etc, but it is questionable whether it is suitable for plays, bands and a multitude of performances that could cater for children, families and a wide range of performance genres.
Clearly, parking is a problem in the area of Bowral Memorial Hall and inadequate provisions for parking will add only to the already congested town centre.
I personally think it is time there really was proper community consultation and development that truly reflected the community population in the towns and villages Cr Arkwright refers to.
If February 3's letters in the SH News on other issues are an indication of the feelings of the Wingecarribee Shire community, then it is high time that any proposal be put on hold regardless of whether it be a facelift to Bowral Memorial Hall, a Shed over Moss Vale Paddle Pool (as many have described it), the ongoing saga about the Mittagong Bowling Club site or a $5 million makeover of the Council Chambers.
There is a council election due in September this year. It would be a shame to see all these council-driven projects go ahead and have fresh councillors inherit commitments the community does not necessarily support.
So let's not settle for a sub-standard development or one that does not completely fulfil our needs.
We should have quality developments that consider the future of the shire and not waste our money on anything less than that.
I think it is high time, as is clearly indicated in many of the recent letters to the editor, that the community voice be heard.
