Taking down IDRU first grade league leaders Avondale at home was always going to be a tough ask for the Bowral Blacks on Saturday. Despite opening the scoring Bowral were unable to hold off Avondale, who stormed home with three late tries to win 35-12.
Bowral only trailed 12-5 at the break but yet again a string of injuries to key players decimated the Blacks’ resources.
Baiden Terry, Adam Walsh, Andrew Tyson and Mark Minter all went off in the second term and captain-coach Chris Creber said he was also in doubt for this Saturday’s home clash against Camden at Eridge Park.
“I doubt those guys will be able to play on Saturday and I may also struggle,” Creber said.
Creber said Andrew Hindmarsh’s try five minutes in had Avondale rattled.
“It was fairly hard fought until the last 10 minutes. They got tired and we were threatening with the ball but failed to make the most of it,” he said.
“We bombed three tries in the first 20 minutes and gave them too much possession. I cannot fault the guys’ effort; they put their bodies on the line.
“They have a massive pack but did not get on top of our forwards. They did not score any tries from the first phase and when they went wide we stopped them. We backed each other up in defence.”
