World champions still the one

AUSTRALIANS Edward and Marjory Hirst invented polocrosse in 1938 and yesterday the current Australian team showed how it should be played.

From Thursday to Sunday the Australians led by captain Suzette Thomas matched up against the top three nations in the world, but no one could get near the home team.

The matches were more like mismatches, as the world’s number one team flexed their muscles and were too skilful, too courageous and, simply, too good.

The other teams did their best to stop the unstoppable green and gold brigade, but it wasn’t to be for the visitors.

Yesterday Australia won the first division final 27-8 at Bong Bong Picnic Race Course. The women’s team won their chukkas 12-5 while the men got up 15-3.

The win was set up with a telling 7-0 first chukka by the women. Berrima resident Alison Mathie teamed up with the West Australian pair Jodi Tiver and Thomas to set up a very handy lead by the end of the first term.
