MITTAGONG’S perfect opening to the season came to a screaming holt on Sunday morning when the massive East Campbelltown Eagles overpowered the Lions 48-6 in hot conditions at Sid Sharpe Memorial Oval in Oakdale.
Both sides entered the match undefeated, sharing the honours at the top of the table, but only the Eagles maintained their 100 per cent record.
Mittagong showed glimpses of the courageous defence they are capable of, but the sheer size and strength of the Eagles left no one questioning who the new force is in the recently merged Group 6/Wests Juniors competition.
The game was only seven minutes old when Easts crossed for their first try of the day and it didn’t take long for them to expose the Lions defence a second time, crossing the white line two minutes later to take a 10-0 lead after nine minutes.
Mittagong managed to hold on through the middle stages of the first half but the scoreboard blew out to 28-0 at halftime with Easts scoring three tries in quick succession before the break.
