WITH their admission into next year’s South Coast Group 7 competition signed off, the Robertson Spuddies have appointed former Western Suburbs five-eighth Adam Doyle as captain-coach.
Doyle signed on the dotted line last week and heads to the club with an impressive background that includes stints with English Super league club Warrington as well as 32 first grade games with the Magpies.
In 2001-2003 he played for Cabramatta before captaining the Narellan Jets in 2004 to 2006.
Doyle then ventured over the border to play for Souths Logan in 2007 before linking up with the Queanbeyan Blues in 2009.
A strong disciplinarian, Doyle said he was looking forward to the challenge of leading the Spuddies who will field first grade, reserve grade and under-18s in 2010.
“It’s a hard challenge but from what I’m told the club has the nucleus to become competitive and that’s what I will be striving for,’’ he said.
“I want to make the opposition know that when they meet Robertson they will have to work hard for every point they score, they will quickly learn to respect us.
“I hope to have a couple of training runs before Christmas just to get to know the players and then we will start full-time training early in the new year.
“At this stage I plan to have all three teams to train together on a Tuesday night and after that the respective coaches can decide their own training schedule.’’
Club president Grant Pointing said he was delighted to have Doyle on board as captain-coach.
“Next season will be the first time Robertson has played in a first grade competition since 1994 when we played in Group 6,’’ he said.
“Adam has a very positive attitude and is keen to see the club go forward and I can assure you everyone associated with Robertson is right behind him.”
Pointing said the club was also talking to a host of other big name players, including Jade Lucas who won this year’s Group 7 competition with Albion Park Eagles, Moss Vale prop Willie McDonald and former Cronulla reserve grade hooker, Mark Delamont.
He said there were a number of other players in the mix including former Melbourne Storm prop Ian Donnelly and David Rawlini from Yenda, last year’s Group 20 player of the year.
“We are in negotiation with all these players so we will just have to wait and see what the outcome is but I can assure you here and now Robertson will be a force come 2010,’’ he said.
Pointing said the club was also looking for volunteers for 2010.
