THERE may be only a trickle of interest at the moment, but those behind Robertson Rugby League Club’s push to enter first and reserve grade in next year’s Group 7 competition are hoping for an avalanche of support in the coming months.
Club president Grant Pointing has already called one public meeting to gauge the community’s support and is of the opinion that once word spreads of the club’s intention the number of inquiries will escalate.
Pointing firmly believes that the club’s future lies in taking the step towards entering first and reserve grade sides next season.
“Our juniors are now coming through to the senior level and if we don’t try to give them an opportunity to play in the highest level of local rugby league then we will lose them to other clubs,’’ he said.
“Our Regan Cup team will make the semis this year and even though not many of them are first graders we have a club that can take them there as we are financial enough to give them the opportunity by recruiting a couple of players to guide them and our under-18s into next year.
“The big hurdle for us is volunteers to man our home games and manage the teams.
“We feel we need at least 30 people to be committed to this task so that those working at our home games are not overburdened.’’
He went on to say that this year Robertson juniors was able to field an under-16s side and is confident of retaining most of those players for the years to come.
“Our aim is to promote our juniors to the top grade as quickly as possible without damaging their confidence but we will need to buy carefully as to not hamper these young player’s prospects,’’ Pointing said.
Pointing has issued an invitation to those willing to support the club’s move to first and reserve grade to contact him by August 10 so that the club can start formulating plans for 2010.
He can be contacted on 0408 852 178.
Meanwhile an under strength side went down 50-0 to Windang in their VB Regan Cup clash on Sunday.
But despite the loss coach Rick Fitzgerald was pleased with the effort.
“We only had 13 players to select from and the situation become worse whenwe lost Brett Cumming with a cork five minutes into the game,’’ Fitzgerald said.
“But to their credit the boys played really well completing all their sets and managed to keep penalties to a minimum.
“Fullback Ben Hansen was outstanding in a side that never gave up.’’
Robertson’s next match is an away encounter against Northern Suburbs this Saturday.
