Moss Vale hope to win twice in three days

04 Sep, 2009 11:56 AM
TONIGHT marks the start of a massive weekend for the Moss Vale Dragons.

Much of the team will front up to the Group 6 player of the year presentation, before the first grade side travels to Narellan for their do-or-die semi-final against Oakdale on Sunday.

Dragons props Elliott Esquilant and Willie McDonald are in contention for the Group 6 first grade player of the year award.

If a Dragons player was to win it, it would be a massive coup for the club. The last Moss Vale player to win it was Robert Thompson more than a decade ago.

Esquilant is considered one of the favourites and the big bopper said he would be thrilled to take the award.

“I think our whole team has contributed all season and tried very hard but I have received a lot of the accolades,” Esquilant said.

The passionate Dragons front man was among the Group 6 president’s picks for player of the year.

“if we were to pick a Group 6 side tomorrow, he would be first picked,” Grahame Andrews said.

“The way he played last Saturday night, especially in the last 20 minutes was very good.”

Mittagong under-18s star Zac Blackshaw is another Highlander in contention tonight. He has been nominated for the under-18s player of the year.

Moss Vale rescheduled training this week so the players would be able to support Esquilant and McDonald tonight.

Coach Randall Laughton said they would train again on Sunday morning, hours before the game.

Moss Vale need their front row pair to step up against Oakdale.

Oakdale defeated the Dragons at Community Oval only a few weeks ago but Laughton is backing his side to topple the Bears.

“We are as good as any other side in the competition,” he said.

“We just need to show it.”

Moss Vale’s have a couple of changes from the team that was beaten by Thirlmere/Tahmoor last weekend.

Daniel Washbourne and Robert Stolk have been replaced by Tom Hayter and Ben Murchie, while Rob Noble has been picked to start in the second row. Damian Barton will drop back to the bench.

The match is to be played at Narellan at 2.30pm on Sunday.
