Moss Vale get serious about clinching the premiership

31 Jul, 2009 04:10 PM
ALARM clocks are usually reserved for getting up to go to work Monday to Friday. Or if you have to get up for something special on the weekend - a wedding, christening, barmitzvah - something you cannot be late for.

But despite winning six matches straight and shooting to equal first on the Group 6/Wests Juniors table, Moss Vale’s first graders are expected to set their alarm clock come Saturday night.

The Dragons have added an extra training session to their program to ensure they can step up a gear heading into the semi-finals. Sunday morning training starts this week at 11.30am.

Gone are big Saturday nights on the drink or a sleepy Sunday morning as the full first grade squad is expected to front at Lackey Park for a light run.

Three hours later they face The Oaks.

Coach Randall Laughton said it was all about making sure the team was mentally ready to tackle second-last placed The Oaks and avoid complacency.

“The extra training run this week will make sure the boys don’t take this game too lightly,” Laughton said.

“It’s something we’re looking to do regularly heading into the semis.”

Under the new plan, late Saturday nights on the drink will be a thing of the past as Moss Vale show how serious they are about claiming the 2009 premiership.

Captain Daniel Drewe said most of the players didn’t drink alcohol the night before matches but the new regime would discourage it even more.

He insists the Sunday morning session is not a traditional “captain’s run” and he was not behind the idea.

“I’m not sure whose idea the Sunday morning session was,” he said.

“I think it’s got to do with the fact that a lot of the first grade players couldn’t make training [on Tuesday night] because of work, illness, TAFE and things like that.”

Drewe said his team had not discussed winning the competition but he said this year’s competition is the most open it’s been in recent years and his team were a genuine contender.

Despite winning six straight, the captain said his team had not shown its full potential.

“We have a bit up our sleeves heading into the last few weeks, for sure,” he said.

“Last week we had to defend hard, the week before it was more about attack - we haven’t really put both sides together yet.”

A left-footed field goal from halfback Steve Fairbairn sealed a one-point win for Moss Vale over East Campbelltown last weekend.

Laughton said Easts were the best team his side had faced all season.

Bowral Bunnies start the day at Community Oval on Sunday at 11.30am, before reserve grade at 1pm and first grade at 2.30pm.
