MOSS FAIL: Disallowed tries cost Moss Vale Dragons

07 Sep, 2009 10:15 AM
MOSS VALE bowed out of the Group 6 rugby league first grade finals series with a heart-breaking 25-24 loss to Oakdale yesterday.

The Dragons levelled the score at 24-all right on fulltime to send the game into golden point extra time.

But the Workers stepped up with a field goal eight minutes into extra time to progress through to Saturday night’s preliminary final against Picton.

Moss Vale had three tries disallowed throughout the match, one in the first half and two after the break.

Jess Micaleff stormed over in the 22nd minute, but referee Glenn Whiteman called it back for a forward pass much to the shock of Dragons and Oakdale fans and players alike.

In the 50th minute, Daniel Drewe put a big front-on hit on an Oakdale forward that saw the ball come loose. Dragons centre Tim Small scooped up the ball and dashed over the tryline.

But Whiteman, on advice from a touch judge some 40 metres away, ruled Drewe knocked the ball on and awarded a scrum to Oakdale.

The loss means Mittagong’s under-18s are the only Highlands team still alive in Group 6 in 2010.
