THE end of the season cannot come soon enough for Mittagong who slumped to another heavy defeat in Group 6/Wests Juniors first grade rugby league on Saturday night.
League leaders Picton beat the cellar dwellers 52-7, which means Mittagong have now conceded more than 700 points in their 17 games so far this season.
Mittagong started strongly and matched the Magpies for the opening 15 minute, before Picton crashed over for two quick tries.
They added another pair before the break to make it 24-0 at halftime and scored soon after the break to ensure there would not be a Lions comeback.
Picton lead 42-0 before Mittagong got on the scoreboard - through an unlikely Daniel Fairbairn field goal.
The home crowd cheered the one-point and it lifted Mittagong’s spirits. Justin Madden scored soon after to make it 42-7, before Picton picked up a few late tries.
Mittagong had seven fresh players for first grade and relied upon a number of reserve graders to make up the team.
The Lions played well in patches but Picton’s outside backs were too quick, scoring a number of runaway tries that sunk Mittagong’s chances.
Mittagong’s best were captain Al Rebeck, hooker Rob Carter and centres Corey Shepherd and Daniel Gates.
