A COURAGEOUS effort fromthe first grade Mittagong Lions wasn’t enough to ground the fast-finishing East Campbelltown Eagles at Mittagong Sportsground yesterday afternoon.
Mittagong led by six points until the 63rd minute, when the Eagles scored a trio of tries to snatch the points.
The final score was 20-10.
Mittagong started off on the back foot but their defensive line held strong as they Eagles had countless sets attacking the Lions’ tryline.
The Eagles finally crashed over in the 10th minute to lead 4-0.
The Lions hit back and dominated the remainder of the half.
Halfback Rob Carter spotted a gap in the 20th minute and darted downfield before offloading to Ben Shepherd who scored in the corner.
The score was deadlocked at 4-4 at the break.
The Lions have struggled to play the full 80 minutes all season and again this proved to be the case.
They started the second stanza strongly and Daniel Marmont put the home team in front in the 57th minute.
The Lions ran the ball on the last tackle and Marmont stepped inside his man to crash over near the touchline.
A super conversion from Mark Williams made the score 10-6 to the Lions.
But injuries to key players like Michael Hadju and a fitter East Campbelltown team killed off the Lions’.
The Lions best were Carter, front rower John Dobson who has improved his ball running, lock Troy Martin and interchange forward Josh Rose.
Mittagong have a bye next week.
