SUNDAY’S clash with East Campbelltown starts a massive month for Moss Vale’s first grade team.
Five wins on the trot has them in equal first place on the Group 6/Wests Juniors ladder and a realistic chance at securing the minor premiership.
The Dragons’ run home includes Easts, Oakdale, The Oaks and Picton. If they continue their current form, they could meet fellow league leaders Picton in the last round to decide who finishes first.
Coach Randall Laughton said the side was not looking that far ahead, but each player must be aware of the history they could create. Moss Vale haven’t been in a first grade final since 1990.
That said, it could all be irrelevant unless they beat the unpredictable Eagles on Sunday.
East Campbelltown beat Moss Vale in round one, but the Dragons were without a number of key players.
Moss Vale have a near full strength side for Sunday’s away clash with prop Elliot Esquilant retuning after a week off with a cork. Laughton also gave Isaac Loader a 70 per cent chance of playing. If Loader plays, they will be missing only lock Rob Noble from their best 13.
East Campbelltown have been known to flood their team with Bundy Cup players one week and struggle for numbers the next. Their Bundy Cup team has a bye this weekend and are out of contention for the semi-finals, so the signs are ominous for Moss Vale.
Dragons president Ross Webb said the club would keep a close eye on the team sheet this weekend. Eagles players from last week’s Bundy Cup game will not be allowed to play in Group 6/Wests Juniors on Sunday under the NSW Rugby League portability rules.
Moss Vale believed East Campbelltown fielded a number of illegal players when the two teams last met, but nothing could be proven.
The match is scheduled for Waminda Oval in Campbelltown but is subject to change. Matches have been shifted from Waminda recently due to an inadequate playing surface.
