IT was the game Willie Macdonald could afford to miss and the 74-0 scoreline vindicated Moss Vale’s, Southern Highlands, captain-coach’s decision to rest himself against the hapless All-Saints.

No amount of praying at the half did anything to stop the onslaught as the Dragons went on from a 40-0 halftime lead to crucify the Saints in the 14-try Mittagong RSL first-grade drubbing at Community Oval yesterday.
Stand-in captain Dan Drewe finished with three tries and nine goals to total 30 points, while Tim Small bagged four tries and Isaac Loader also got a hat-trick.
Shane Martin (pictured), Mark Delamont, Scott Drewe and Dan Hewson all got on the board as the Dragons made it five wins for 2010 (including the points from the Oakdale game).
The Dragons were scoring at the rate of a point a minute and were 30-0 up at the 35-minute mark. Small’s second try of the day was club secretary Luke Hanon’s pick.
He said Small side stepped several All-Saint defenders before racing down the right flank to score under the posts.
Macdonald, who stayed on the sidelines with a bout of flu that is running through the team, said it was a good game and the boys did what was asked of them.
“We stuck to our structure and did the little things and the 50/50 things right,” he said.
Ben Murchie was strong at fullback replacing the injured Steve Fairbairn and the bench also stepped up, Macdonald said.
The only negative was new recruit Lee Faavae, who suited up in reserve grade, broke a hand and could be out for several weeks.
Injured winger Robert “Chika” Wiya is out for the season after breaking his collarbone in round seven.
The Dragons have only conceded eight points in their last two games, while amassing 144 points themselves.
Reserves reap reward
The reserves continued their climb up the ladder after they won 60-16 over the higher placed Saints. The Dragoons led 32-10 at the break and went on with the job in the second.
Todd Russell, Brett Cumming and Tom Stokes all got doubles, Simon Badgery got a hat-trick, while Matt Burke and Dean Cernovskis also crossed.
Matt Conquest kicked seven goals in the 50-point mauling. It’s the team third win this season.
They were sitting ninth heading into the game but will now be close to the top four
The under-18s had a bye and have officially been dropped back to division two after failing to make dent in the top grade.
