Butcher set to end the slaughter

Butcher set to end the slaughter

30 Jan, 2009 09:02 AM
ROBERTSON Spuds have appointed a new coach in a bid to turn around their miserly form over the past two seasons.

Rick Fitzgerald returns to the helm at Robertson in a bid to restore some pride to the Highlands club after a winless 2008 in Group 6.

Robertson’s last success came under Fitzgerald in 2007, when they won two games competing in Group 7. They return to Group 7 this year in a bid to register a few more wins.

The club has been hampered by a lack of numbers and a spate of injuries in recent years, but with a return to their old stomping ground and with Fitzgerald back as coach, club officials are hoping for a resurgance in 2009.

No one can deny Fitzgerald’s passion for the club.

He is the local butcher and president of the club’s junior body and he knows the monumental task that confronts him.

But Fitzgerald believes he can turn around the club’s fortunes.

”We have to go back to the start and build from there,’’ he said.

“It’s essential that we mould a group of players who want to play for Robertson and a group that wants to win.

“One of our biggest obstacles is getting players to training for various reasons, but if we cannot train then we definitely cannot play together.”
