Will whips rivals in maiden final heats

28 Oct, 2002 10:31 AM

Only rotten luck stands in the way of crack sprinter Whipper Will snaring Saturday's VIP Kennels Bookies Maiden Final (503m) at Moss Vale Greyhounds.

The boom pup proved he was no bunny by scorching around the Moss Vale circuit in a lightning 29.45 in Saturday's heat- more than half a second quicker than next fastest qualifier Swift Gal (29.99).

Starting from box 1, the emerging star was only fairly away but mustered electrifying speed to lead at the first bend and spear clear for a brilliant 18 length win.

The Marty Hallinan trained pup justified his 1/2 quote but will face a stiffer test in Saturday's final after drawing the eight box.

"How he jumps is the key to the race and if he gets out clean he'll win by the length of the straight," Moss Vale Greyhounds president Des Bentley said.

"But he's a very strong railer and he could easily find trouble if dogs inside him jump well."

Whipper Will has been installed as 4/5 favourite for the event while Cherokee spirit will start a narrow second pick (5/4) despite quailifying in 30.21.

The other six runners look hard pressed to upset the top two but Hill Top trained pup Lord Nelson might be the smokey after staging a strong performance to win his heat in 30.46.

The final, which is worth $1500, will be bolstered this time round with the first three placegetters receiving free services to sires from the VIP Kennels.

Alan Budd has donated the services to quality stud dogs Spoken Joe, Silent Emotion and Yosemite Saint.

"This is one of our biggest finals of the year and that shows by the quality of the fields we had in the heats," Bentley said.

"To think that we're attracting trainers like Marty Hallinan here is a good rap for the club and the standard of racing we're providing."
