A most exciting competition match at Lackey Park last Saturday saw the United team just get up against the largely junior MossVale Rangers.
Winning the toss for the third time, United skipper David Wood had no hesitation in batting first. Lunt and Ross opened in fine style averaging just over four runs an over. A couple of unplanned run-outs (one batsman laughingly said he must have been tripped!), saw us slump to 3/64 after Andrew Ross was well caught on the mid-wicket boundary for an aggressive 36 (included 5x4's and 2x6's). Ravi Singh (25) was joined by Shaz Rana (49) and these two lifted our innings total to 162 - which we considered was probably not quite enough! L Smith 2/13 & N Breeze 2/16, these two young successful bowlers for Rangers, showed real promise.
Rangers started their run chase in determined style with opener M Arnull (53), eventually top scoring in a very good display. Dan Campbell adopted his usual attacking innings to make a very quick 24. Both these batsmen gave chances, which were put down by the United fieldsmen - mostly off bowler Ray Darney, who, in his first game of the season, bowled well enough to deserve better than the excellent 2/20 which he obtained. At 3/135 off just 25 overs, Rangers looked to have us on toast, but the bowlers and fieldsmen lifted their game and we scraped home - taking the last seven wickets for 20 runs! Our friendly BP Proprietor Shaz Rana with 3/25 capped a great game and led the way, while veteran Woodsie 3/31, chimed in as well. The ebullient United team were delighted with their success after their loss to Hilltop-Picton Gold last week-end.
