Visiting bowlers from the Sydney metropolitan area, the South Coast, Goulburn and also local district people combined to fill the greens at Bowral Bowling Club for the prestigious Tulip Time Open Pairs Tournament last weekend.
A total of 42 pairs of men and women played in the event which was sponsored by Schweppes and BCIB Insurance.
A total of $2500 in prize money was on offer for the five games of fifteen ends over the two days.
Saturday morning had fine but overcast threatening weather and the first game was finished without problems.
During the second game showers of rain made the going uncomfortable, but all played on and finished. During the third game the rain poured down and with a rumbling of thunder and a bit of lightning and all players thoroughly wet, play was suspended until Sunday morning.
On Sunday a few scattered showers threatened to spoil the tournament but all of the bowlers persevered and finished the five game program.
Winners of the event were T and D Roberts and second place S and W Reid, third prize went to L Smith and P Ellem and fourth to K and J Boniface, all visiting bowlers with four wins.
Game winners also received prize money and they were; 1 Betty and Trevor Selmes Bowral, 2 G and L Portner 3, Therese French and Alan Hendrie, Bowral 4, A and V Brescia and 5, M Sheather and W Crane.
All of the players and supporters received a Smorgasbord Luncheon and light refreshments before and after the game.
Again the management and staff rose to the occasion to provide first class greens and hospitality to the visitors.
Because of this tournament there were no mens social bowls at Bowral last weekend.
In the clubhouse on Friday night Kevin Rea wont he right to try for the $1000 jackpot in the Jokers Wild Promo, but picked the wrong card.
The Jackpot will go to $1025 next Friday night.
Bob Sutherland won the $20 worth of free tickets at the Tombola on Sunday night and Tony Howe won the $20 voucher.
Bowral Womens Bowls
Last week the rain interrupted final of the Club Championship Triples was completed.
The winners were Joan Andison, Fay Jones and Pat Graham with the runners-up Norma Cannings, Jan Hendrie and Therese French.
Also during the week, 25 ladies travelled by bus to Five Dock Park Bowling Club where they renewed friendships and had an enjoyable game of bowls.
On Tuesday the social bowls comprised of six games of two bowl pairs and winners were Janice Booth and Therese French with the runners up Robin Reid and Jan Tucker.
The trophy winner was Meg Bardwell.
The monthly charity day was run on Thursday October 23, with thirty men and women in attendance.
The usual game of bowls and the delicious afternoon tea followed and the winners on the day were Ross McPhee, Janet Hendrie and Terry White. Rod Ferrington, Sylvia Handley and Therese French were the runners up.
Raffle winners were; Margaret Addie, Sylvia Handley, Robin Reid and Kath Turner.
$320 was raised on the day, with proceeds to go to the Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul.
The next mixed bowls day will be on Tuesday, Melbourne Cup Day, which will commence at 10.30am with sweeps and raffles on sale until the start of bowls at 1pm.
The bell will be rang at approx. 3 or 3.15pm when afternoon tea will be served in time to view the running of the big race.
Proceeds of the day will be donated to St. Vincent de Paul and the Salvation Army.
A buffet luncheon and Melbourne Cup function will also be held separately to the Mixed Bowls Day.
