Triple treat for rugby fans

26 Feb, 2001 10:30 AM
If rugby’s the game they play in heaven then Eridge Park will be the closest thing to heaven on earth this Saturday.

The Bowral Rugby Club has snared a massive coup by securing the world’s top three rugby trophies as well as a trio of top NSW Waratahs players for this weekend’s junior registration day.

The World Cup, the Tri-Nations trophy and the Bledisloe Cup will be on display for the big day and Blacks President Val Tyson is urging all interested youngsters to sign up.

“This day will give young kids the opportunity to see that you can learn your rugby in regional NSW and still reach the top,” he said.

And with current Waratah players Steve Talbot, Marc Schterbina and Tim Rapp confirmed starters, the strength of local rugby will be further evidenced.

Steve Talbot was born and bred in the Highlands and learned his formative rugby skills playing for Chev and then for the Blacks before moving to Sydney.

He has since gone on to represent NSW in U19s, 21s and seniors as well as pulling on the green and gold for the Australian Sevens team.

A development session to hone youngster’s skills will kick off at 12.30pm and Tyson believes such a huge day is the perfect initiation for aspiring young players.

“For kids that haven’t played before it’s important that their first introduction has a big impact,” he said.

“To have senior players from the district that have gone on to bigger things provides a great role model.

“A day like this also shows that they can be part of a well organised, well run club.”
