Top spot on the line in first grade showdown

30 Nov, 2001 08:34 AM

Top of the table honours will be at stake tomorrow when Moss Vale meets Wingello in a pivotal one-day clash at Chater Oval.

Giant killers Wingello will be out to keep its dream run alive against a Moss Vale outfit desperate to put a rollercoaster week behind them.

But Moss Vale captain Matt Heyhorn has denied any suggestion that the Bradman debacle will unduly affect his side.

“The boys are really looking forward to the match and I don’t think it will affect us too much,” he said.

“In fact the guys are pretty pumped for this match and I think Wingello will probably be the side we play in the final.”

The surprise package of the current first grade season, Wingello will be bolstered by the inclusion of Craig Hutton and James Baldwin from the now defunct Exeter side.

“Wingello have definitely been the sleeping giants this year and we certainly won’t be treating them lightly,” Heyhorn said.

“They’re a very competitive team that always niggle and are always very competitive.

“But at the same time they’re good blokes and we’re really looking forward to the match.”

With both teams highballing on top of the first grade ladder, the mental edge will be just as important as the top position for the winning team.

“It’s all psychological and it will be good to get one up,” Heyhorn said.

While confident of a strong showing, Wingello captain Ricky Martin believes lack of match fitness might prove costly for his charges.

“It’s disappointing that we haven’t played for three weeks and I’m worried that we might be a little flat,” he said.

But Martin is delighted to have Hutton and Baldwin in his side and is hoping they will tighten up the middle order.

“They’re a big asset and we’re struggling a bit with injuries so they’ve come at the right time,” he said.

“It will be good for the team’s confidence to have another bowler as well.”

And Martin attributes that confidence and a stronger batting performance to the side’s success this season.

“The top order’s really performed and we look like a completely different side,” he said.

“We haven’t been bowled out at all this season which is a huge change from last year.

“Another year on turf has really helped the guys as well.”

The talented batsman also agrees that this will be a one-day grand final prelude but remains wary of Moss Vale’s most potent asset.

“They are a very experienced side who know how to post a good score,” he said.

“Guys like Loader and Heyhorn can be very dangerous.”
