Local golf’s week of weeks is set to swing into action next Monday when the Highlands Golf Club hosts its 11th annual week of golf.
The Southern Highland News in conjunction with Moss Vale Holden will sponsor the event which highlights on Wednesday with the $5000 pro-am.
“The response has been terrific and this is the best patronised event we’ve had yet,” club pro Dave Bennett said.
“It’s a top quality field of pros and the course has held up beautifully despite all the dry weather.
“The greens are absolutely perfect.”
Some of the leading professionals to tee it up in the event include two time winner Jeff Wagner, NSW pro-am order of merit winner for the past two years Aaron Byrnes, David Van Raalte also a two time winner of the order of merit, Paul Marantz who is known for shooting low scores, former trainee Matt Millar who won a host of pro-ams in the past two years and Neale Smith who topped the USPGA tour school a few years back.
As for the local professionals, Larry Canning from Bowral who is a past winner is in good form, Darryl Purchase who was second in 2000, former Junior David Paddison who was equal second with Darryl in 2000 is now out making his living from playing after finishing his third year traineeship with Larry last year, Tony Meyer another of Larry’s former trainees and the winner of the big Muirfield pro-am last year, Robert Kennedy knows this course backward as he joined as a junior in 1987 and has spent the past few years at Mt Broughton. Moss Vale Professional Robert Marsh who is out playing more this year, Highlands Golf Club’s own trainee Robbie Nancarrow who has been working hard on a swing change and is now hitting the ball straighter than ever and of course the 2000 winner Dave Bennett.
No prediction about this year.
If you look at the draw, you will see there are about 25 spots left as at the beginning of this week and if you would like to play in the pro-am, please ring the pro shop to book your game.
The cost is $33 which includes your lunch and a drink and also an opportunity to play, watch and learn from NSW best pro-am players.
Don’t be afraid to ask for some advice.
It is what playing with the pros is about.
The course has held up well through the recent dry weather, but there will be some run and about five under 65 is what you will have to shoot to be close to winning.
The greenkeepers have done a wonderful job in preparing the course and the greens will be perfect.
The event is a single stableford in three grades plus a ladies event with a 1, 2, 3 countdown team event with the professionals sponsored by the Mittagong RSL.
There will be a trivia event held on every tee off for the first time ever as well.
At around 6.30pm we are having a $500 shoot out for the pro’s on the 18th sponsored by Don Ceramics so come down at 6.30pm to watch the action and see if someone can hole it.
The presentation of prizes will be on straight after the shoot out.
So if you look like winning a prize, we would love to see you collect it at the presentation.
Check the draw out and feel free to come along if you are not playing and watch the pros in their office.
