Tigers claim title in grand final boilover

25 Mar, 2002 08:47 AM

The Wingello Tigers have roared into Highlands cricketing immortality by stunning Moss Vale to claim the first grade title at Bradman Oval on the weekend.

Written off as lightweights at the start of the season, the gutsy Tigers lapped up the underdog tag to give the club its first top grade title in more than half a century.

A dashing partnership between Tigers captain Ricky Martin and James Baldwin sealed the victory for Wingello.

After coasting through the season unchallenged, a shellshocked Moss Vale was left lamenting its fourth grand final loss in as many years.

But if the pain of defeat was etched on the faces of the Moss Vale players, the glory of winning against the odds went long into the night for the Tigers.

"This is bloody great and the boys really showed their spirit today," Martin said.

"We had a two year plan to win this title and we might have had our backs to the wall a few times, but we did it.

"This is not just a victory for Wingello, it's a win for all the other small clubs out there.

"This has got to be the highlight of my career."

The 33/1 rank outsiders of the competition when it started, Martin blended a side of raw talent and cool-headed experience into the district's top cricketing outfit.

And despite being bitterly disappointed with the loss, Moss Vale captain Matt Heyhorn was humble in defeat.

"They just played great and we couldn't really do much more," he said.

"We probably didn't take all our chances but they batted well and showed plenty of heart.

"You'd think after losing four years in a row that we'd be used to it but it certainly doesn't make it any easier."

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Moss Vale's momentum was jolted when run scoring machine Andrew Canestrari fell cheaply.

This meant the minor premiers usually scorching run rate suffered and they could only manage about three an over to finish at 9/255.

But a tough century to Tony Friedrich and 40 to Terry Loader meant that Mossy had a fair total to defend on the batter friendly Bradman wicket.

Wingello failed to make the start they wanted with the in-form Greg Martin falling cheaply for 11 and Richard Stone sent packing for a duck.

But from the moment James Baldwin strolled to the crease with Ricky Martin, the Tigers took control of the match.

Baldwin and Martin brutalised the Moss Vale attack, hurtling towards the total in one of the partnerships of the season.

Martin holed out to Nash for 88 late in the match but it mattered little, with Baldwin's six to bring up the win and his century typical of the Tigers aggressive approach all season.
