Three of the best for Mossy soccer champs

25 Sep, 2002 10:14 AM

The Moss Vale under-13s soccer side has claimed a third straight title by beating Spirit 2-0 at Goulburn on Saturday.

The brilliant side has dominated the age group for three years, earning the remarkable record of 196 goals for and 16 against in a golden era.

The Brian Doyle coached squad tackled the tough Goulburn competition for the first time this year but showed few signs of distress in Saturday's thumping win.

The minor premiers, who have lost just one match in three years, scored a goal in each half to overcome their stubborn foes in front of a parochial home crowd.

"They controlled the match from the start to the finish and it was pure jubilation when the final whistle went," proud coach Brian Doyle said.

"The majority of the side has been in for the last three years and they're so successful because of how they get along and play as a team.

"They just love the game, they live and breathe soccer."

The Mossy men hit the lead in controversial style in the 20th minute when striker Jordan Lowe converted a Ben Hamilton cross.

The shot hit the crossbar and cannoned downward just over the line forcing the referee to consult the touch judge before awarding the goal.

Mitchell Spargo sealed victory for the Highlands lads 15 minutes into the second term when he slotted one in with one touch from inside the box.

Victory was made even sweeter for Leigh Doyle who was playing his first game since breaking his arm in June against Spirit and Doyle has now decided to resign from the job as coach after three successful years at the helm.

"Just the way this team has geled has made me look good," he said.

"They've been a pleasure to coach and I'd like to thank assistant coach Ian Casson and Argyle St Auto Port for their sponsorship."
