Tennis tykes end season with a smash

Tennis tykes end season with a smash

30 Sep, 2002 08:27 AM

Our Saturday morning program has now finished, which means we have winners of our beginner's competitions.

At Moss Vale close friends Rachael Hamilton and Stephanie Smith were equal on points after the eight weeks play, before Rachael won the title in a last week playoff.

Rachael and Stephanie finished on 61 points with the next best Justin Sams and David Canterbury on 44.

In Bowral the competition was just as fierce with only one point deciding first place.

In the end the winner was Caitlyn Healy-Nash who played some fantastic tennis this term beating Rose Chandler by that barest of margins.

Trophies were also handed out to the best-performed player in each of the coaching groups.

The winner of the 9:15am class was Tahlia Forbes, the 10:15am class went to Ariadne Sgouros and the 11:15am class went to Catherine Manners.

Well done to all the winners and all the kids who had such a good term. Registration is now being called upon for the coaching and comp classes at both Bowral and Moss Vale and is filling fast.

Term four is always the biggest of the classes and players should book early to avoid disappointment.

On the note of enrolments, forms are being taken for the term four afternoon competitions and as has been the case for the past few terms, players will miss out.

The entries will be taken on a first in first served basis so please hurry. I can be contacted on 0409 150057 or by e-mail on bowraltennis@ozemail.com.au

Night Comp:Our night comps are now in full swing and as usual we are bumper to bumper with teams on both the Monday mixed night and the Thursday men's night.

We have a record number for the Monday night with nine teams in both division one and also division two.

Paul Carpenter's team will go into the division one events as clear favourites after having so much success over the past few seasons.

Teams to watch will be last years' finalists in Pat Donoghue's mob and also the team led by Bill O'Connell who always does well.

The other team that looks very impressive on paper is the team of Rod Preston, Peter Jensen, Ossie Bruckhard, Louise Bruce, Sue Allman and Jenny Shingler.

I am tipping this team to make the final this year and try to take out Paul Carpenter's team in the process.

We have a new team in division two and by all reports they are the team to beat. The team consists of Vernon and Rosemary Vella, Robert Ennever, and Wendy and John Conolly.

They look the goods, but will have to be on their toes to keep the other teams at bay.

The Thursday men's competition in division one is all allocated through us and therefore we hope to have the teams of equal strength.

Even allowing for this we can usually look ahead and see which team looks that little bit stronger.

This time I can't see any favourite at all so I am going to get splinters by sitting on the fence and say that any of the five teams can easily take this out. In division two the new team of David and John Arnot, Mark Harris, Peter Cohen and Peter McGuire look really strong and I see them going all the way and winning the comp.

This will shake up the pecking order a little as the perennial leaders in the teams led by Greg Parsonson, and the team led by Craig Curlewis, and the Sainsbury team fight hard to maintain their stranglehold on the leaders board.

It all makes for interesting tennis and we look forward to many good nights ahead.
