Teams set to ignite finals charge

28 Feb, 2003 08:25 AM

The Highlands top first grade cricket side's will start their finals charge tomorrow when the final round of competition winds up.

With play-off positions already sealed, this weekend's matches will be an ideal chance for teams to boost confidence and find the right combinations to challenge unbeaten competition leaders Wingello.

The two teams most likely to challenge the Tigers are United and Moss Vale, who will do battle at Bradman Oval tomorrow.

With Mossy struggling to rediscover the passion that has made them the team to beat in recent years and United still looking like pretenders, both captains agree the match will provide some real food for thought.

"The time for us to start winning is now and tomorrow is a good place to begin," United skipper Cameron Belshaw said.

"We have to prove that we can be serious competition to Wingello and hoepfully we can give the finals a kickstart by beating Moss Vale."

In its debut year as a merged club, United sits second behind tearaway leaders Wingello while Moss Vale has secured third spot and Picton/Hill Top the crucial fourth.

"Unfortunately there looks like no chance of us getting into second but we'll still use tomorrow's match as a stepping stone," Moss Vale captain Matt Heyhorn said.

"It's been a very up and down year for us but we're definitely playing with more consistency now.

"This is the money end of the season and the team's morale is really good."

In tomorrow's other first grade match, Robertson will try and finish a forgettable season on a high note when they meet Wingello at Chater Oval.
