Team honours sick mate in last roll triples thriller

30 Sep, 2002 08:26 AM

21 nerve sapping ends of top shelf bowls were reduced to a single roll in a heartstopping triples final at Mittagong Bowling Club on Saturday.

The Jim McHugh skippered side trailed most of the match but an inspired final end sealed a remarkable last gasp 19-18 victory.

The winning trio picked up three bowls in the last end with McHugh snatching the clincher in his team's very last bowl of the match.

With a gusting wind lashing across his face, losing skipper Merv Wright had the final bowl to win it but came up well short.

An emotional winning team dedicated the title to sidelined teammate Tom Baker who missed the match following a midweek operation.

"We're all just ecstatic and we won it four our mate Tom," Bakers' stand-in Ron Egan said.

"I honestly thought we were gone and that's one of the most exciting matches I've ever been involved in..

"It's certainly the way to win a game."

The newly crowned champions faced the near impossible task of a two bowl deficit on the scoreboard and a bowl down on the final end before McHugh stepped up to the plate and delivered two stinging blows.

The side of Wright, Jack Tonkin (lead) and David Ruse skipped to a three point lead midway through the match courtesy of a brilliant six bowl end.

But the tenacious team of McHugh, Egan and Neil Lewis (lead) kept within striking distance as the match wore on to claim the title in a tape measure finish.

"I really thought we had it coming into the last end but we just dropped short," a dejected Wright said after the match.

"Wind affected the game a lot but in the end it was very exciting."

In what proved to be a memorable club triples tournament, both finalist sides scraped through to the big match with narrow one bowl semi-final wins.

In other Mittagong Bowling Club news, the popular twilight bowls format is set to commence next month.

The club's best members will also take to the greens in October in a friendly interclub match with Penrith RSL.
