Swimmers state claim in NSW Country showdown

28 Feb, 2003 08:28 AM

It poured personal bests for the district's top swimmers in the weekend's NSW Country Championships at Homebush.

In all, 14 best times tumbled as Bowral Swimming Club's leading light's tore up the water.

Spearheaded by the brilliant Orlanda Sexton, the nine-person Highlands contingent finished an impressive 37th out of 112 of the country's best clubs.

"This is the best performance I've ever seen by a Southern Highlands team," Bowral coach Glenda McRae said.

"It was really nice to see them do so well together."

The team also included two disabled athletes, visually impaired swimmer Melissa Perrine who swam four personal bests from four events and Down Sydrome swimmer Dan Rumsey who swam three from four.

It was also the first time at a major state championship for young up and comers Annabel Blake, Shannon Lovegrove and Grace Lovegrove.

"This was a wonderful experience for these swimmers and there were a lot of state and Olympic swimmers at the meet," Ms McRae said.

"They all represented the Southern Highlands superbly and their behaviour was excellent."

But the well-respected Ms McRae warned that unless Highlands pools opening hours are dramatically revamped, the district would be hindering the progress of its promising young swimmers.

"It's very difficult for top swimmers like Orlanda with the short season we have here," she said.

"If we never get an indoor pool, we'll never produce a top line swimmer like Ian Thorpe.

"Travelling to Campbelltown for 8-10 sessions per week is just npt feasible and something has to be done."

Fourteen-year-old Sexton continued her meteoric rise at the championships, posting three personal bests and eclipsing three club records.

She also bagged an impressive three silver medals at the meet in the 14 years 100m freestyle, 14 years 200m individual medley and 14 years 100m butterfly.

Annabel Blake's personal best in the 12 years 100m freestyle also set a new club record.
